Statement Following Remarks by Jagmeet Singh on Modernization of Official Languages Act

Jean Johnson, president of the Fédération des communautés francophones et acadienne (FCFA) du Canada, made the following statement regarding NDP leader Jagmeet Singh’s remarks on the modernization of the Official Languages Act:

“I appreciate the leader of the NDP confirming, during his visit in Acadie-Bathurst this morning, his party’s commitment to immediately modernize the Official Languages Act and strengthen language rights should he form the next government after October 21.

However, I invite Mr. Singh and other party leaders to go one step further. Since Canada marked the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Official Languages Act two weeks ago, national media has started to pay more attention to the issue of loss of legitimacy of French as an official language in Canada. Furthermore, in the past two years several stakeholders have given substantial thought not only to why the Act should be modernized, but how.

In this context, I want to invite party leaders to flesh out, concretely, what they would see in a modernized Official Languages Act. They are welcome to refer to the proposal for a thorough overhaul of the Act presented by the FCFA last March for this purpose.”
